The Best Movies of 2004

2004 came with a bucket full of surprises, with movies high scored on IMDB and other websites, but, unfortunately, not all of them had been a commercial success. The ones that I considered worth watching are listed below.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has Jim Carrey in the main role and, as you already know, when you say Carrey, you say comedy, so the outcome is a successful romantic comedy-drama film. The movie also combines psychological thriller elements with science fiction and a nonlinear narrative to explore the nature of memory when it comes to love. It was released on March 19, 2004 and grossed over $70 million worldwide. Despite its modest income, the film was highly praised by critics.

2. The Incredibles were incredibly incredible. The American computer-animated comedy superhero film was the sixth installment produced by Pixar. Its title is the name of a family struggling to live normal lives among normal people but their condition gets in the way: they are incredible superheros. The head of the house’s compassion for people and his desire to help them drags the entire family into a battle with a villain and his wicked robot. The Incredibles received generally approval ratings and it was a commercial success, as well, with a gross of $631.4 million against a budget of $92 million. Its sequel is set for release on June 21, 2019.

3. In 2004 was released the first film in the Saw series and it was successful enough to encourage the producers to create six more parts of the franchise. The idea of the film is the next one: appreciate your life and be fair, otherwise the fate won’t be fair to you. I wouldn’t categorize it as a psychological horror, but a psychological film, period. Of course, most of the scene are hart to watch, but it rather leaves you with a desire to live than a good scare. They made a good film with modest budget of $1.2 million, but was worth it. Saw grossed $103.9 million and received mostly positive reviews.

Other movies worth watching are: Million Dollar Baby, Shaun of the Dead, The Notebook, Troy, Crash, The Day After Tomorrow, Shrek 2, The Butterfly Effect and many others.
