I would characterize the year 2003 as an adventurous year, having the best movies released then all belonging to the adventure genre. We traveled from J. R. R. Tolkien’s Grey Havens to the Caribbean shore, then into the depths of the ocean to find Nemo. Join me in this exciting retrospective journey and forget for a couple hours of your day by day worries.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the most successful movie in the series with a favourable score of 8.9/10 on IMDB and 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. While Gollum is leading Frodo and Sam to Minas Morgul in their attempt to destroy the One Ring, the former Fellowship aid Rohan and Gondor are in a great battle in the Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith and the Black Gates as Sauron wages his last war against Middle-Earth. The movie was a critical and commercial success, with a gross of $1.120 billion against a budget of $94.

2. Finding Nemo is another successful computer animated movie by Pixar. When Nemo gets lost, the entire ocean finds out and contributes as well as they can in the adventurous rescue mission. It’s not just a physical journey to Sydney Harbour, but also of self development as Nemo’s father learns that he is way too protective with his son and that Nemo has to take care of himself. Finding Nemo won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and was the second grossing nominated film of 2003 with a gross of $936 million.

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was the fourth grossing nominated movie of 2003 with The Matrix on the third place, but the former won the viewers’ and critics’ positive reviews. The second instalment in the Pirates of the Caribbean series was nominated for four Academy Awards and BAFTAs while Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Jack Sparrow was highly praised, winning him the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and many other nomination for BAFTA and Golden Globe Award.

Other movies worth mentioning are: The Matrix Reloaded, Mystic River, X2, Oldboy, Big Fish, The Last Samurai, a.o..
